In this episode, I speak with Jeroen van der Laak and Julie Boisclair about the IMI BigPicture project, one of the most ambitious data-sharing initiatives in digital pathology.
Rather than building a single AI solution, BigPicture is creating a large-scale, GDPR-compliant repository of clinical and nonclinical pathology images with rich metadata, designed to support researchers, industry, and academics across Europe and beyond.
We discuss the legal, technical, and organizational challenges of aligning 44 partners, the reality of heterogeneous lab infrastructures, and why data quality, governance, and sustainability matter more than hype. We also explore how emerging technologies like LLMs, foundation models, and European AI infrastructure amplify the value of curated datasets.
This episode is a candid look at what it takes to build AI-ready infrastructure that actually lasts.
